Оганес Вагаршакович Бароян - выдающийся отечественный эпидемиолог, приобретший мировую известность, благодаря прогрессивным, оригинальным подходам к пониманию эпидемиологии инфекционного процесса, основанным на неоценимом личном опыте, приобретенном в ходе экспедиций по ликвидации вспышек опасных инфекций в разных точках планеты. Помимо традиционных направлений исследований, академик Бароян уделял большое внимание новым тенденциям в развитии эпидемиологии, вопросам неинфекционной эпидемиологии (эпидемиологии рака, сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний и др.), а также методическому уровню исследований, привнося новейшие достижения микробиологии, иммунологии, генетики, молекулярной биологии на службу эпидемиологии. Был прекрасным лектором, пропагандистом всего нового в эпидемиологии и смежных дисциплинах, активным популяризатором науки.
