Merited Scholar of the Russian Federation, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Director of F. Erismann Institut of Public Health and Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine, I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University), Principal External Epidemiologist, the Ministry of Health of Russian Federation.
Briko is one of the leading Russian epidemiologists. He formulated the modern concept of epidemiology, its content, and its structure. He was a leader of the epidemiological research on group A streptococcal (GAS) infection, its surveillance system, prevention, and diagnosis. For the first time, researchers started to study the molecular epidemiology of GAS infection in Russia. Briko took part in developing the epidemiological surveillance for GAS infection including microbiological monitoring. He made a significant contribution to the diagnosis and prevention of GAS infection. He first handled the implementation of the GAS DNA test based on polymerase chain reaction (mitogenic factor (MF) in streptococcal pathogenesis) in Russia. Also, Russian scientists developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay tests for the detection antibody for the GAS group-specific antigen. The GAS infection prevention system in groups of people was developed and then implemented. Moreover, Tomycidum (Russian broad-spectrum antibiotic, disinfectant) showed high effectiveness of treatment and prevention. As a result, the new epidemiological rules and methodological guidelines had been prepared for streptococcal surveillance and prevention in Russia. The methodological guidebook on pneumococcal epidemiology and vaccination was published in addition.
Briko is the author of the idea that “globalization impacts on infectious diseases”. He participated in developing the new educational standard of 14.02.02 «Epidemiology» adopted by the Ministry of Education of Russia in 2009. He participated in developing new prevention methods of healthcare-associated infections in Russia.
He is the author of more than 650 scientific papers, 7 patents (co-author), 5 monographs, 8 books, 6 textbooks and 23 guidebooks and manuals for doctors and medical students.
Briko was an advisor to fourteen students in a Candidate of Science Program and eight students in a Doctor of Science Program.
In addition to relevant researches, Briko carries out considerable work in the fields of improving student’s and doctor’s education. He was involved in writing and publishing textbooks on infectious diseases and epidemiology for different levels of medical education: medical colleges and schools, nursing degree and medical faculties. He participated in writing and editing the first Russian practical guidance for the epidemiology of infectious diseases and guidance for epidemiology and evidence-based medicine for students. He is the author of the first textbook on epidemiology for the Preventive Medicine and Medical Faculties. His textbooks won the annual Medical and Pharmaceutical Education Prize for “The Best Textbook” twice.
In 2019, the guidance on infectious disease epidemiology for doctors was developed and published under his leadership.
The work accomplished to have a crucial contribution to improve and bring Russian medical education standards into line with the European system in middle-school and high-school.
